Nature is a real source of inspiration for me. It provides a veritable moment of freedom where I, through wandering and solitude, can create without constraints, particularly constraints of time.
On the day I took these photos, there was a thick fog creating a particular, timeless atmosphere, with everything bathed in soft, enveloping light. No more sky, no more horizon, no more elsewhere, just the here and now, infused with this near-divine white light.
I shoot in film for its special connection with materials, but also for its distinctive temporality. It’s a calmer way of envisioning photography, far from the instantaneous. Every image counts. With my tripod and medium-format camera, I observe, consider, then pose, frame, adjust, and finally take my photo, for which the exposure time alone lasts several seconds.
The rest of the process takes place later. In the darkroom, the making of prints is also an experience of unique temporality—under the orange-red light of sodium, from one tray to the next, on paper—where photography becomes matter, more real than ever. I develop the negatives, produce the contact sheets, make my selection, and finally print my favorites. Through these steps, I bind myself to the material and to my photos.

Bastien Torterüe de Sazilly was born in Paris in 2002 and grew up in the foothills of the Pyrenees, where his attachment to nature began. After graduating with a BTS in photography, he worked with Diamantino Quintas to develop his skills in the darkroom. Here, through the physical and intimate relationship with images, his love of film photography solidified. He also studied documentary photography at Le 75 in Brussels.
